All it took was a weak man in a world of trouble, that being New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams, a glimpse of light through which to escape, and just like that, we have concentration camp, er, sorry “Deportation Holding Facility (“DHF”)”* number two coming soon. The infamous Riker’s island is going to be turned into a DHF. In exchange Adams is going to get federal criminal charges—of which there are a number of the very serious corruption variety—dropped. This incredible and obvious bit of additional corruption for Adams, and with the Trump administration, of course, has Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan—who looks like he’s never passed an open bar without making 100% sure they served alcohol—positively giddy. The Substack, “Closer to Edge,” has a write-up that beautifully tells the story, so head over there for full details. In the meantime, let’s review the definition of a concentration camp.

It’s:
A camp…: no campfires or grills, but it has toilets and shelter, so it’ll do. ✅
…that concentrates people…: It’s an island prison in the East River that covers, in total, about 2/3 of a square mile. It can hold up to 15,000 inmates. Estimates from data around the web are that if there are 15,000 inmates, there will be about 450 square feet per inmate, but that includes common areas like dining halls, the exercise yard, etc. so that seems pretty concentrated to me. For the record, at present the prisoner population is much less than 15,000, so the vacancy sign is on. ✅
…in horrible conditions…: it’s a prison. ✅
…with little accountability…: it’s prison on an island. ✅
…and which functions outside any judicial protections.: OK, maybe a few of the prisoners-to-be, er, deportees (sorry that keeps happening, I’m not sure what’s wrong with me), have lawyers, but I think it’s far to say that not many will get much help, legal-wise. ✅
Checkity✅-check✅-check✅!
So, then, putting it all together (as mentioned before,* it’s more fun if you think of Jeff Foxworthy saying this part), you just might have a concentration camp!
How pissed is Homan that Alcatraz is in the heart of California, in San Francisco Bay, no less. And it’s completely empty. I mean, imagine what he could do with that.
